The Ocean Plastic Paradox

Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans. Beach cleanups, while visible and satisfying, capture only a fraction of what flows into marine environments. The real challenge lies deeper, in the systems that produce and distribute disposable materials at industrial scale.
Scientists tracking plastic debris have discovered that most of it sinks below the surface, accumulating in deep-sea sediments and inside the bodies of marine organisms. The problem is not just aesthetic. It is biochemical, ecological, and ultimately economic.
Solving it will require more than individual choices. It demands a redesign of the materials economy from the ground up.
